Topmate: A way to monetize the network for the creators.

Topmate enables professionals to handle requests for personal advice or guidance effortlessly by allowing others to initiate a one-on-one interaction while maintaining total control over every aspect of the process.

The idea was to simplify personalized interactions by providing avenues for everyone to share their knowledge and wisdom with their followers. It allowed people to connect with them in the most simplified and seamless manner.

Let’s start from the beginning.

What was happening at Topmate?

Topmate offered 1:1 conversations to users to get personalized advice or guidance from professionals. Users initially came into these sessions excited to learn more from experts. They could ask questions toward the end of these sessions and get them answered.

As a result, the Active User Percentage and Number of professionals became essential metrics for Topmate. The Active User Percentage indicates the percentage of users logging into the app and engaging with the experts. Along with requirements of internal analytics, what team Topmate saw after a couple of months, the experts wanted to see the key metrics of their engagement with their audiences. As a result, Topmate’s team had to brainstorm ways to get creators access to their data in the coming days.

One such strategy was to use embedded analytics on the data collected via Mixpanel and Backend (postgres).

Thus, a new product feature was born, albeit with a new challenge.

Challenge: Increasing Active User Percentage and Engagement

While Topmate had found a way to pique user interest and engagement, another challenge loomed. Topmate had to extract data from Mixpanel and combine it with internal data. But, the scalable data platform requirement was a severe problem. 

With rate limits on the Mixpanel and the extensive data scale, that too without a platform to unify the data presented an issue. A lack of scalability and reliability in the data pipelines meant some failed while dashboards were getting slow.

As a result, Topmate started seeing a dip in their confidence and visibility of user behavior and engagement metrics.
